Another riot flares at Bali’s Kerobokan jail

ANOTHER riot has broken out at the violent overcrowded Balinese jail which is home to Schapelle Corby and the Bali 9.

Police said some inmates tried to break through the front gates to escape Kerobokan State Penitentiary during the riot on Sunday afternoon.

Badung Police chief Benny Arjanto told the Jakarta Globe newspaper the riot started about 4pm when three inmates stabbed a fellow prisoner.

The three, who were “drug convicts” were then pursued through the prison by other inmates and police from outside the jail were called as a riot broke out.

Parts of the jail were damaged, police chief Arjanto told The Globe and some prisoners had tried to escape by breaking down the front gate. More than 150 police were stationed to guard the prison after the riot was eventually quelled.

In June last year inmates rioted and police and guards injured when police entered the prison to try to arrest a prison drug dealer.

Sunday’s riot also follows the murder of a Kerobokan prisoner on January 12, who was tortured by 13 fellow inmates

Balinese police have said the jail is 300 percent overcrowded which has helped fuel the violence.
